"What Happens In Vegas Stays On Facebook"

I was very excited to attend the presentation "What Happens In Vegas Stays On Facebook" for my Writing for Multimedia Class. The name of the seminar interested me as I'm a very active user of social media and thought that it was a clever way to sum up how public our digital second lives can be. I not only learned about the precautions of exposing too much or little of yourself, but also found out features within websites I had no idea about. The first presenter Emily Lenard, Associate Director of WiredWI, explained how I could limit a certain group to seeing certain parts of my Facebook profile and pictures without eliminating every detail. I can still load pictures up for my friends to see, yet ban people who may not appreciate the pictures so much by grouping them into a list. I also learned that having more than one account on Facebook could result in being permanently deleted from the Facebook world. This concerned me as I know people who have made a second account containing clean information for potential employers. I was relieved, however, when Emily said that your Facebook account IS as private as you make it and employers can absolutely not pay to see past the privacy settings. Phew!

The second presenter Katie Felten, President of MKE Live, explained how to use the features in LinkedIn and told us that it is almost unnecessary to pay for a premium account as the free account allows you to do anything that is vital for an impressive profile. She also taught us the ways in how to grow networks and how to keep your internet profile as professional as possible, as LinkedIn is a professional website. Her presentation helped me learn the ways of this site as I’m a very new member and am still getting used to the features. I also hope to get a job out of college and think that employers definitely check out social media for each potential employee. All in all, I learned a lot from these presentors and am very glad I attended.

  2. I really enjoyed the presentation as well! I was extremely shocked to learn about the "bring kicked off" for having two accounts because I too know of people. Not only that but I made an account for my dad, using my email address (spare email) because he did not have one at the time, so I wonder if that is the same thing. Sadly I know of people who have facebook pages for their dogs!!! But i feel like a lot came out of both presentations and we are now well prepared in the world of social networking and media and ways to stay safe.

  3. I agree with you, it was kind of a sigh of relief. But I didn't really have anything that was that bad that people shouldn't be able to look at. A lot of my stuff on my profile is just funny pictures with my friends or family. I also agree with Rachel that I didn't know that you could get kicked off Facebook for having two accounts! That's ridiculous!
Here's something I found about it:

  4. I was relieved as well when she said that in no way, shape, or form could anyone pay facebook to reveal your account information. Still you have to be very careful about what you do on there so it was interesting to see the tips about creating lists and removing tags in photos.

  5. I already have utilized some of the ideas from the presentation such as the lists and removing tags in photos. I didn't however know that you could take off your entire wall; however, I feel like this kinda takes away from some of the fun with facebook. I was looking through my privacy setting trying to find out if you can just block users from commenting on my wall instead of taking the whole thing down. Do you know if this is a possibility

  6. I also didn’t know if you are caught with two Facebook accounts, you can be permanently banned. That’s pretty weird but I guess it makes sense. I’m sure it helps the people at Facebook run a smoother site; therefore it benefits all the users. And yes, thank god potential employers can’t pay to view a Facebook site if they want.
